What was The Far Side known for? ›

Gary Larson (born August 14, 1950, Tacoma, Washington, U.S.) is an American cartoonist best known for his single-panel comic series The Far Side, which is renowned for its scientific content and bizarre humour. Larson produced The Far Side for 15 years, from January 1980 until January 1995.

The final Far Side comic was run in newspapers on January 1, 1995. Larson wrote a letter to his followers in October 1994 that explained he was ending the series due to "simple fatigue" and avoid having The Far Side fall into the "Graveyard of Mediocre Cartoons" if he continued.

Larson was born in Tacoma in 1950. Geographically, he didn't make it too far. He now lives in Seattle.
